Case 2: Tool aids distance students

Jennifer Foreshew | September 15, 2009

NEW lecture recording technology means distance students at the University of Southern Queensland almost feel they are on campus.

The university rolled out Camtasia Relay software to all lecture theatres and teaching rooms from the start of semester two in late July this year.

The technology, developed by US-based TechSmith, captures any movement on the computer screen and verbal explanations of the lecturer in class then makes it available to students as a screencast in video format. This can be played back on a computer or downloaded to a portable player such as an iPhone.

USQ Faculty of Sciences (Learning and Teaching) associate dean Lorelle Burton said the software was initially trialled by hundreds of distance students in Faculty of Science courses.

"We found it was a robust way of actually recording the materials and downloading them and making them readily available for students to download on to iPods, Associate Professor Burton said.

She said that distance students had previously accessed static recordings of lectures.

"What is good about it is it actually tracks all the activities -- so it isn't just the static PowerPoint sliding through, but any activity that the lecturers use to engage the students in class, such as drawing on tablets and PCs to circling things and writing formula, that is also captured in the recording, said Professor Burton, who is also Camtasia Project executive.

"So the people at home, when they download it and look at it, can also experience that same interactivity."

  2. Q1. How will this technology benefit the student?

The Camtasia Relay Software is a technology that captures the lectures and activities of a daily discussion in school, it allows students not to go to their institutions but rather by just downloading the current or previous lessons they have, they could just look and experience the interactivity unto their digital devices.

Q2. Considering our setting in the Philippines. Do you think all of the subjects could be applied with this technology? List atleast 3 subjects that you think should be applied with this technology and another 3 subjects that you think should never be implemented with it.Give reasons to each subject.

I think not all are applied with this technology, its because these 3 subjects needs an interaction between the students towards the teacher:

1.) Math - needs explanation of how the instructor come up with the answer, and also why the instructor come up to the answer.

2.) Science - the same, needs an interaction between the students and the instructor of how and why together with who when and where.

3.) English - the last one is also the same, it needs interaction because the students will have a difficult time modifying and correcting there work or answer if the answer are not in the correct grammar.

And these are also the 3 subjects that can be applied in this technology:
1.) Physical Education (P.E.) - theirs no need for an interaction between the students and the teacher but rather follow and execute, what the instructor does, the students will also do it in the same activity and execution as is.

2.) Philippines History - because theirs no need of such explanation, if their is a fact about the history of the Philippines then the answer to every question must be a fact.

3.) Filipino - If the life of Rizal is being viewed together with his works and ideals then it is all the fact and nothing else.

Q3. What is the possible drawback of this in the instructor and the student's side? Explain.
The drawback is that, the students will have a lot of difficulty finding answers to there questions, if they did not understand the lesson, they might as well ask the instructor but the drawback is that they cannot question the difficult part because its just a lesson downloaded.

Q4. List the name of some schools here in the Philippines that manipulate this technology.

Q5. How will this technology help our country's educational system and educating our countrymen?

It would somehow help the country's educational system and improve the learning insights of the countrymen, even the out of school youth could eventually learn something in this software, the very lesson of this perhaps would be the dependability of the students, we must be independent towards these technologies because we could somehow become indolent if sooner or later we'll be very dependent unto this technology but also we could consider this technology as a tool that aids the distance students all over the Philippines even outside our country.

  3. Q1. How will this technology benefit the student?

This technology would be beneficial for the students who don't have enough time to spend in school, and for those working students also. In the Philippine setting, this may help us or the students to be virtually updated, since they are using this Camtasia thing, they may able to know how to interact with other students using this technologtical advancement that we have.

Q2. Considering our setting in the Philippines. Do you think all of the subjects could be applied with this technology? List atleast 3 subjects that you think should be applied with this technology and another 3 subjects that you think should never be implemented with it.Give reasons to each subject

I think not all of the subjects may be applicable with this kind of technology, because although it seems that it may offer alot, but still there are still subjects, that I think should be taught in the classroom with a teacher, a classmate and with a complete learning facilities. Subjects like Music,TLE, History among others may have this kind of technology.

    - In music, perhaps Camstasia could do the thing, with the teacher virtually seen teaching tones, music and everything, since the student can still also interact with the video and audio devices which are readily available for the students.

-In History, all we have there is to study the history of the country and all, so I think, having really an insturctor right there in front is not really needed, so perhpas, they can make use of this one.

-In TLE, we tackle things like home economics, so i think you can have this one.

Here are the other 3 subjects that may not be applicable with this technology.

-Math. According to the surveys, we are one of the countries who are poor in math, so i think we should really be hands on in teaching the students apecially in this area, because we are mainly dealing with numbers, and with all the formulas, and the with all the mathematical equations that are often confusing and hard to understand, so I think, we really need to have an "seen" instructor in this subject.

-English. Although we know that Filipinos can speak and understand english well than the other race in the world, we still have to really educate the Filipino children and youth to become really more competitive and to have an edge among other people. English also is our universal language, so we really have to learn it in by all means, and it would be much easier if it will be taught with a teacher in the classroom.

-Science. In our country, we barely hear and see students that excells in the field of science and technology, compared to other countries. So in this case, i think we should really have to teach students in the class so they can really undrestand and deal with the chemical formulas and all, and so students can also interact with the teacher directly, not virtually.
